Sizing a heat pump for St. Louis city requires a contractor to work out two separate capacity questions, not one. Homes in St. Louis city, MO run heat about seven months a year, from October through April. As outdoor temperatures fall through that heating window, a heat pump delivers progressively less warmth at exactly the moment the house demands more, which means the backup heat strip is not a curiosity on the spec sheet but a component with real runtime. A contractor who skips a proper load calculation and just matches the old unit's tonnage will leave the backup element carrying more load than the homeowner realizes until the electric bill arrives.

What a Heat Pump Installation Covers

Isometric illustration of a cutaway single-story house showing interior ductwork, an indoor air handler and simple furniture, connected by lines to an outdoor condenser unit beside the building.

The outdoor unit sits on a pad beside the house and holds the compressor and the outdoor coil, which together do the work of moving heat between outside air and your home. Inside, the air handler mounts in a utility space, basement, or closet and circulates conditioned air through the house. These two units are the core of what gets placed during an installation.

A refrigerant line set runs between the outdoor unit and the air handler, carrying refrigerant back and forth through insulated copper tubing. A condensate drain line runs from the air handler to a drain point, and a thermostat mounts on an interior wall to give you control over the whole system.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece applies to your house.
