The refrigerant circuit in a Carroll County heat pump works hardest in cold weather, when the system strains to pull usable heat from outdoor air that is giving less of it. Homes in Carroll County, MO run heat about seven months a year, from October through April. The reversing valve, the coil contacts, and the low-pressure side of the circuit all accumulate wear during those months in a way the summer cooling load does not match. A contractor diagnosing a fault here checks the heating-mode components first, because that is where the hours add up.

Half the homes in Carroll County, Missouri were built in 1961 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A heat pump running in a house that old has been asked to move heat through a great many Missouri seasons, and what shows up inside an opened unit reflects that. Capacitors, contactors, and reversing valves in stock of this vintage tend to carry wear that a visual check from the outside does not show. Parts availability is a real variable: the older the platform, the narrower the supply chain a contractor is working from, and some components have to be sourced before a repair schedule can be set.

The Parts of a Heat Pump a Contractor Checks First

Isometric cutaway illustration of a house showing interior ductwork, an indoor air handler unit, and an outdoor condenser unit beside the building.

The outdoor unit sits outside the house and holds the compressor and the condenser coil. The compressor is where a contractor looks when the system runs but moves little or no heat. The condenser coil and its fan are checked when the unit runs hot or shuts itself off early.

Inside the house, the air handler holds the evaporator coil and the blower that pushes conditioned air through the home. The reversing valve sits in the refrigerant line and is what a contractor tests when the system heats in cooling mode or cools in heating mode. The expansion valve and the refrigerant lines that connect both units are checked when temperatures at the registers are off.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines which components apply to your specific system and what work each one needs.
